Suitable LCD Display Replacement or Repair for WSA1 ??

Hi folks, the display on my WSA1 is slowly going funky. Is anyone aware of a replacement available? Maybe one from a K series? Or even someone that can repair them? I have attached a picture of what mine is doing. Thanks.

Hi ATS,

I've put some queries out for you. At least it is still mostly readable for the time being , that must be very frustrating!

Hope to get back to you soon.

Thank you so much Mike it's greatly appreciated. It is pretty frustrating trying to learn my way around the WSA1 with the top half of the screen cut off smiling

Hi there! new WSA1 user and will be looking for more info as I begin to learn this wonderful classic and unique synth.

Was there an option for replacement screen (like Cool Blue alternative) - looks very large and maybe somewhat difficult to find a replacement for ... like for like.

Hi All,

I've read some info on the net that people have had success in using old photocopier screens in them. Not getting very far with research as of yet I was hoping that the screen might be common with KN2000 but it doesn't seem so.

I've upgraded you so you can access the additional downloads.

Cheers,
Mike

Re: Suitable LCD Display Replacement or Repair for WSA1 ??

Thanks a lot Mike, much appreciated - would be very interested if there were ANY alternative, as I say, this looks to be quite unique and therefore maybe only a few options on this (worldwide). Did Technics UK ever come back on this topic with anyone else on this forum? - doubt they still have any stock of course but typically the big OEMs find 'alternative' replacements for aftermarket in support of their customer base, worth an ask.

Best Richard.

ps. as new WSA1 owner I'll be trawling this site for more info, patches, programming tips etc., so looking forward to that - good to see so many other dedicated users still !

Re: Suitable LCD Display Replacement or Repair for WSA1 ??

Hi Richard,

The part number for the WSA1 screen is QSLG017AA and if you Google that code you'll find a few parts companies that claim to be able to source it still. As you're in UK you could also try W D Greenhill who might be able to source it.

If you Google WSA1 display or search for it on Ebay you'll see a video from someone who replaced his screen with a photocopier screen part number HLM8218 which appears to be equivalent to a Sharp Sharp LM32P18. However, that would take quite a bit of research to get working! I'll attach pinouts for the Sharp to this post but I have no idea whether they will help. I've tried to find pinouts for the original Panasonic item but can't find then you would have to look carefully inside the WSA1 and trace back the circuit diagram to see if any of this is useful, it might be a red herring! Even the Youtube video doesn't actually show the replacement screen working.

I'll be making more enquiries as and when I can. There are various websites selling replacement screens for devices if the correct information can be gathered.

For info, the KN2000 screen is a slightly different model number (QSLG011AA), both have 320x240 dots

Regards,
Mike

Re: Suitable LCD Display Replacement or Repair for WSA1 ??

Hi Mike - apologies for late reply following your helpful response.
Did have a brief Google however like yourself no specific success, though as you mention if we can find the actual Panasonic connection detail then no doubt a modern equivalent can be sourced from one of the guessing larger mass electronic/LCD display distributing Co.s worldwide.

I've had a contact previously at WD Greenhill when I was after some obscure Kawai parts so can try in the hope there, though nothing in the Technics area of their site (maybe they can point me in the direction of an aftermarket Technics Co. who supply older keyboards etc.).

Due to receive next week a classic KN1400 which happens to have what appears to be same LCD footprint and now reading up a bit, was a 'budget' end keyboard that carried over these 'pro' large screen displays .... who knows maybe they are in some way interchangeable (saw KN2000 Pt. No. was different though does look same unit?).

More trawling this weekend Mike. In the meantime still enjoying my unique purchase in the WSA1 - the UI is genius compared to even my more modern synths from the Big 3.
Why don't other OEM's use this concept? Yet to even read in detail the accompanying manuals the guy sent!!,
As so easy to find way round.
Was intersects in the (only it appears) expansion "Dance' board which is no doubt nigh impossible to buy separately, as the very few made as I understand it, are bound to be fitted in the WSA's of current owners. Though also reads a not particularly great in content ....

Thanks again Mike and please let me know if you get any joy further,
BR Richard

Hi Mike and all! Just wondered if anyone had any updates on this regarding replacement for my WSA1 LCD - must be an equivalent that I could get from an outlet I'm certain, or even pulled from another ailing board/piece of hardware.... look forward to any support on this one, cheers Richard.
ps. also now managed to get the rack version too! sweet smiling

Hello,

Still no news about a possible LCD replacement for you WSA ?

Have someone looked at or tried the HLM8619 or 8620 for example as an alternative (same PIN numbers 14) ?

Alternative display specifications sheet and WSA1 pinouts details from the service manual are attached.

Hi Kiolbo - hope you are fine. Great post smiling , thanks for a useful post from my previous (quite old now!) queries.

Only 'issue' I see is that the Pin7 states "NC: Not Connected" on the new LCD, whereas the Technics Service schematic shows "-22v" as per Pin2. I'm not a power electronics expert (by any stretch of the imagine ...), however I may be that this can be routed in parallel with Pin2 (?, not sure on current draw, etc.).
Anyway, it does look to be a very close match, so good work on that search.

Any power electronics wizards on this forum can comment please?

Look forward to your replies!!, as I'd love to update the OEM LCD ASAP smiling
