Re: Full-featured WSA1R for sale

There's another one in Germany for €899 (itm 324067938752) albeit without expansions.

Even pre-COVID, €1195 is on the high side. Market's heading downwards for all non-essential luxury goods (vintage Porches etc). Madly unrealistic now except for speculators. This similar.

Closer to €500 by Christmas.

Patience.

Re: Full-featured WSA1R for sale

Does anyone actually know what was on the Technics SY-EW1 Dance/Techno Expansion board? Any listings of new tones or patches it provided?

Re: Full-featured WSA1R for sale (more info on expansion board)

As the attached advert stated:

“Technics provides two powerful expansion boards: the SY-ES1 Output Expansion Board which adds 2x2 line level outputs and a coaxial S/PDIF; and the SY-EW Series Wave Expansion Boards which add additional drivers and sound parameters.”

Note the plural Wave Expansion Boards. Maybe the initial intent was to have a series? AFAIK there was only ever one.

There's one user on Gearlsutz who has the board, and I asked him/her if some sounds/samples could be posted but none were forthcoming. They had contacted Sector101 to see if it could be reverse engineered but there was no answer. The WSA I bought had both expansions, but the SY-EW ROM card didn't work (output was just noise) so the seller kept it. I didn't get a look at it, and should perhaps contact him to ask for it. If reverse engineering is feasible, I suspect we'd all love to tinker with new drivers...

Interestingly, there were at least two board versions as seen in the attached. The one from the advert (darker green) has a chip in position IC1 which the photo from the gearslutz user does not have. Shame the chip markings are unclear on both.

Interesting, no?

Fascinating. In order to reverse engineer it, it would take working chips. The data stored on the eproms is really where the added features are located.

Is there a list somewhere of what data was on the card, a list of patches, what the new Drivers were, that sort of thing? I've never seen any.

Yes, I fear so. Nonetheless I've contacted the seller of my unit to see if he's willing to part with it; if not I'll ask for hi-res photos at least (to identify components). Maybe we'll be lucky and that the board will turn out to be both available and fixable, or - clutching at straws a bit - that even if it's just one of the chips is still working and readable, someone might be able to determine the appropriate data format.

Digital microelectronics at this level is way beyond my expertise, but I would be surprised if Technics used anything radically different on the WSA to what they were using on other contemporaneous products. When I have more info I'll go fishing on the other Technics fora to see if there were similar cards in use on Technics' conventional keyboards of the time.

Will keep you posted.

Cheers,
auto

Argh! Seller didn't keep the board, or take any photos sad

At the time I'd thought he might try to repair/investigate it (he's a retired Elec Eng, ex-CERN), so I didn't insist. Kicking myself now (he is too, FWIW).

Out of luck I'm afraid.

Meh,
